The Philodendron Burle Marx is a fantastic and relatively easy-to-care-for plant, known for its glossy, spade-shaped leaves and dense, clumping growth. It’s often recommended as a great choice for beginner houseplant owners.
Bright, Indirect Light is Best: This plant thrives in a location that receives several hours of bright, filtered light. An east-facing window or a few feet away from a south or west-facing window works well.
Tolerates Lower Light: It can survive in moderate or medium light, but its growth will slow down, and it may become less bushy.
Avoid Direct Sun: Harsh, direct sunlight, especially afternoon sun, can easily scorch the leaves, leaving behind brown, bleached spots.
Watering
Water When Top Soil Dries: Allow the top 1-2 inches of soil to dry out before watering thoroughly.
Be Mindful of Overwatering: The Burle Marx is prone to root rot. Ensure your pot has excellent drainage, and never let the plant sit in standing water.
Seasonal Adjustment: Water more frequently during the active growing season (spring and summer) and reduce the frequency in fall and winter.
Sign of Thirst: Drooping or wilting leaves usually indicate it’s time for a drink.
Soil and Potting
Well-Draining and Airy: Use a loose, well-draining, and nutrient-rich potting mix to prevent the roots from suffocating or rotting.
Ideal Mix: A specialized “Aroid Mix” or a DIY blend of standard indoor potting soil, perlite, and orchid bark (or coco coir) provides the perfect balance of drainage and moisture retention.
Repotting: Repot every 1–2 years or when you notice roots growing out of the drainage holes. Choose a new pot that is only 1–2 inches larger in diameter.
Temperature and Humidity
Temperature: It prefers average household temperatures between 65∘F and 85∘F (18∘C to 29∘C). Keep it away from cold drafts and extreme temperature changes.
Humidity: As a tropical plant, it enjoys higher humidity (ideally 50% or more), but it is very tolerant of typical indoor humidity levels.
If you notice brown, crispy leaf tips, the air is too dry. You can increase humidity by using a humidifier, placing the plant on a pebble tray with water, or grouping it with other plants.
Fertilizing
Feed in Growing Season: Use a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer once every 4–6 weeks during the spring and summer.
Dilution: It’s best to dilute the fertilizer to half-strength to avoid the risk of root burn.
Stop in Winter: Do not fertilize during the fall and winter when the plant’s growth naturally slows down.

Pruning and Maintenance
Pruning: Minimal pruning is required. Simply use clean, sharp shears to trim away any yellow, brown, or damaged leaves to keep the plant looking tidy and healthy.
Support: Although it’s generally a clumping, self-heading type, it can grow as a low-lying vine over time and will benefit from a moss pole or trellis to encourage larger leaves and a more upright structure.
Cleaning: Dust the leaves regularly with a damp cloth to ensure the plant can photosynthesize efficiently.
Toxicity
Like most Philodendrons, the Burle Marx is toxic to pets and humans if ingested due to the presence of insoluble calcium oxalates. Keep it in a location inaccessible to children and animals.
