The Golden Sedum (Sedum adolphii) is a popular succulent known for its bright, fleshy, evergreen leaves that can take on a beautiful golden-yellow or even reddish-pink tint in bright sun. It has a trailing or spreading growth habit, making it a great choice for hanging baskets, rock gardens, or as a groundcover.

Here is a comprehensive guide to caring for your Golden Sedum:

Light

  • Bright Light is Essential: Golden Sedum needs plenty of bright light to maintain its vibrant color and compact form. Place it in a location with a sunny window where it can receive at least 6 hours of bright light each day.
  • Color Change: The leaves’ color is directly related to the amount of light they receive. In lower light, they will be a more muted green. With more sun exposure, especially some direct sun, they will develop their characteristic golden and pink hues.
  • Acclimatization: If you are moving your plant from a lower light condition to a brighter one, do so gradually to prevent sunburn.

Watering

  • Drought Tolerant: As a succulent, the Golden Sedum stores water in its leaves and is highly drought-tolerant. Overwatering is the most common cause of problems.
  • Allow Soil to Dry Completely: The golden rule is to water only when the soil has completely dried out. The frequency will depend on the temperature, humidity, and light conditions. In warmer months, this may be once every week or two, but in the winter, you may only need to water once a month or less.
  • Thorough Watering: When you do water, water thoroughly until the water drains out of the bottom of the pot. This encourages the roots to grow deep and strong.
  • Avoid Wet Leaves: Try to avoid getting water on the leaves to prevent rot and sunburn.

Soil and Fertilizer

  • Well-Draining Soil: Use a porous, well-draining soil mix designed specifically for succulents or cacti. This is essential to prevent water from pooling around the roots and causing rot.
  • DIY Mix: A good mix can be made by combining potting soil with sand, perlite, or pumice to improve drainage.
  • Fertilizer: This plant is not a heavy feeder. In fact, too much fertilizer can cause weak, leggy growth. You can fertilize it once a month during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half or quarter strength. Avoid fertilizing in the fall and winter.

Other Care Tips

  • Temperature: Golden Sedum is quite hardy and can tolerate a range of temperatures, but it does best in average room temperatures between 60°F and 80°F (15°C to 27°C). It is not frost-tolerant and should be protected from temperatures below freezing.
  • Pruning: You can prune the plant to maintain its shape or to encourage bushier, more compact growth. Simply trim the stems to your desired length.
  • Propagation: It is incredibly easy to propagate from stem or even leaf cuttings. Simply snip a piece of the stem or remove a leaf, allow the cut end to dry and callus over for a day or two, and then lay it on top of or slightly press it into the soil. Mist the soil lightly until roots establish.
  • Pests and Diseases: This plant is generally pest-resistant, but keep an eye out for mealybugs. Overwatering can lead to fungal issues like root rot or powdery mildew.
  • Toxicity: Golden Sedum is considered mildly toxic if ingested by humans or pets, so it’s best to keep it out of reach of curious animals and children.
