The Golden Pothos (Epipremnum aureum), also known as Devil’s Ivy, is one of the most popular and easiest houseplants to care for, making it an excellent choice for beginners. It’s a vining plant with heart-shaped leaves that are a vibrant green, often with splashes or streaks of yellow variegation.

Here is a comprehensive guide to caring for your Golden Pothos:

Light

  • Bright, Indirect Light: This is the ideal condition for a Golden Pothos to thrive and maintain its variegation. Place it near a window where it will receive plenty of bright, filtered sunlight.
  • Avoid Direct Sun: Too much direct sun can scorch the leaves and cause the yellow variegation to fade or turn a pale, washed-out color.
  • Low Light Tolerance: One of the reasons the Pothos is so popular is its ability to tolerate low-light conditions. However, in low light, the plant will grow more slowly, and the yellow variegation may disappear, causing the leaves to revert to solid green. Moving it back to a brighter spot can help restore the variegation.

Watering

  • Allow Soil to Dry Out: The key to watering a Pothos is to let the top 1-2 inches of soil dry out completely between waterings. The plant is susceptible to root rot if the soil remains soggy.
  • Signs of Thirst: The plant will often tell you when it needs water. The leaves may start to droop slightly, and the soil will feel dry to the touch.
  • Thorough Watering: When you do water, water thoroughly until it drains out of the bottom of the pot. Discard any excess water from the saucer. In the winter, you will need to water less frequently as the plant’s growth slows.

Humidity

  • Average Room Humidity: Golden Pothos is quite adaptable and can handle average indoor humidity levels without a problem.
  • Higher Humidity is a Bonus: It will still appreciate higher humidity. If you want to give your plant an extra boost, especially in a dry climate, you can:
    • Place it in a naturally humid room like a bathroom or kitchen.
    • Mist the leaves occasionally.
    • Use a humidifier.

Soil and Fertilizer

  • Well-Draining Soil: Use a well-draining, standard houseplant potting mix. You can add perlite or orchid bark to the mix to improve aeration and drainage, which the plant will appreciate.
  • Fertilizer: Pothos are not heavy feeders. During the active growing season (spring and summer), you can fertilize them once a month with a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer diluted to half strength. Avoid fertilizing in the fall and winter.

Other Care Tips

  • Pruning: Pothos can become very long and “leggy” over time. To encourage a fuller, bushier plant, you can prune the long vines. Use clean, sharp scissors to snip the stems back to a desired length. You can also propagate new plants from these cuttings.
  • Propagation: Pothos is one of the easiest plants to propagate. Simply cut a piece of the vine that has at least one or two nodes (the small bumps where leaves and roots grow). Place the cutting in a glass of water, making sure the nodes are submerged. Roots will appear within a few weeks, and you can then plant it in soil.
  • Repotting: Repot your Pothos every 1-2 years or when you see roots growing out of the drainage holes. Choose a pot that is only one or two inches larger than the current one.
  • Toxicity: Important: Golden Pothos is toxic to humans and pets if ingested due to the presence of calcium oxalate crystals. Keep it out of reach of children and animals.
