Ficus bonsai are an excellent choice for beginners and experienced bonsai enthusiasts alike. They are generally forgiving, resilient, and well-suited for indoor life.
Bright, indirect light is ideal. Place your Ficus bonsai in a location where it can receive plenty of light, such as near a south-facing window.
Avoid direct, harsh sunlight, which can scorch the leaves, especially in the afternoon.
While they can tolerate lower light conditions than many other bonsai species, they will not grow as vigorously or develop as well. If you don’t have enough natural light, a grow light can be a great supplement.
Ficus bonsai can be placed outdoors during the warmer months, but be sure to acclimate them gradually to direct sun to prevent leaf burn.
2. Watering
Water when the top of the soil feels slightly dry to the touch. The soil should be kept evenly moist, but never waterlogged.
Water thoroughly until water drains from the bottom of the pot. This ensures that the entire root ball is saturated.
The frequency of watering will depend on the season, climate, and pot size. You may need to water daily in the summer, while in the cooler, dormant winter months, it could be as infrequent as once a week.
Proper drainage is crucial. Always use a pot with drainage holes and never let the bonsai sit in a tray of standing water, as this can lead to root rot.
3. Soil
Use a well-draining bonsai soil mix. This is essential for preventing root rot and ensuring proper aeration for the roots.
A good bonsai soil mix often includes a combination of inorganic components like akadama, pumice, and lava rock, which provide good drainage and aeration, and a small amount of organic material for nutrients.
4. Temperature and Humidity
Ficus are tropical trees and prefer warm temperatures, ideally between 65°F and 85°F (18°C to 29°C).
Avoid exposing them to temperatures below 50°F (10°C) and protect them from cold drafts from windows or air conditioning vents.
High humidity is beneficial. You can increase humidity by:
Placing the pot on a humidity tray filled with pebbles and water (making sure the bottom of the pot is not in direct contact with the water).
Misting the leaves regularly (though this is often a temporary solution).
Using a room humidifier.
5. Fertilizing
Fertilize during the growing season (spring to early fall) with a balanced liquid bonsai fertilizer.
The frequency of fertilization will depend on the specific fertilizer used. Always follow the instructions on the product packaging.
Do not fertilize a Ficus bonsai that is stressed, sick, or in a dormant period.
6. Pruning and Wiring
Ficus bonsai tolerate pruning very well and will sprout new leaves from old wood. This makes them great for shaping.
You can prune back new shoots to maintain the desired shape and size.
The best time for major pruning is during the warm, active growing season.
Wiring can be done to shape the branches and trunk. Be careful, as Ficus branches can be delicate. Regularly check the wire to ensure it’s not cutting into the bark as the branch thickens.
7. Repotting
Repotting is necessary every two to three years or when the tree becomes root-bound (when roots are circling around the root ball).
The best time to repot is in the spring, when the tree is beginning its active growth cycle.
When repotting, prune back the roots by about one-third.

Common Issues
Leaf drop: This is a common and often dramatic reaction for a Ficus bonsai. It’s usually a sign of environmental stress, such as a sudden change in light, temperature, or a watering issue. Don’t panic; simply correct the care and be patient. The tree will usually recover and grow new leaves.
Yellowing leaves: This is often a sign of overwatering. Check the soil moisture and let it dry out a bit before watering again.
Pests: While generally resilient, Ficus bonsai can sometimes be affected by pests like scale, spider mites, or mealybugs. Regularly inspect your tree and treat any infestations with an appropriate insecticide or neem oil.
