Aglaonema ‘Super White’ is a stunning and rare variety of Chinese evergreen, highly prized for its nearly pure white foliage with minimal green variegation. Because of the lack of green chlorophyll in its leaves, it has some specific care needs compared to its greener counterparts.
Here’s a detailed guide to caring for this beautiful but particular plant:
Light
- Bright, indirect light is crucial. Unlike other Aglaonemas that can tolerate low light, the ‘Super White’ needs more light to survive due to its lack of green pigment. The more white the leaves, the more light it needs to photosynthesize.
- Avoid direct sunlight. This can easily scorch the delicate white leaves, causing brown, crispy patches. A spot a few feet away from a bright, sunny window is ideal. It can also thrive under grow lights.
- If you notice the white color fading or the plant becoming leggy, it’s a sign that it needs more light.
Water
- Water moderately, allowing the top 1-2 inches of soil to dry out between waterings. Overwatering is the most common cause of problems for this plant, leading to root rot and yellowing leaves.
- Ensure your pot has excellent drainage. Never let the plant sit in a saucer of standing water.
- Reduce watering significantly in the fall and winter, as the plant’s growth slows down.
Soil
- Use a well-draining, airy potting mix that is rich in organic matter. A mix designed for aroids or a high-quality houseplant mix with added perlite, coco coir, or orchid bark will provide the necessary drainage and aeration.
Temperature and Humidity
- Temperature: It thrives in warm temperatures, ideally between 65°F and 85°F (18°C–29°C). Keep it away from cold drafts from windows, doors, or air conditioners, as this can damage the foliage.
- Humidity: As a tropical plant, it appreciates moderate to high humidity. While it can tolerate average indoor humidity, it will be happiest with some extra moisture. You can increase humidity by:
- Placing a humidifier nearby.
- Using a pebble tray filled with water beneath the pot.
- Grouping it with other plants.
- Note: While misting can help, it’s not a long-term solution for providing high humidity.
Fertilizer
- Fertilize sparingly. A balanced, liquid houseplant fertilizer diluted to half-strength can be applied once a month during the growing season (spring and summer).
- Do not fertilize in the fall and winter. Over-fertilization can cause brown leaf tips.
