Selling size: Single plant | Pot included  | Secure Packing

The Cryptanthus, often called the “Earth Star,” is a fascinating terrestrial bromeliad known for its star-shaped rosette and rich, textured foliage. The ‘Brown’ variety is prized for its earthy tones, including shades of bronze, chestnut, and smoky brown. Unlike many other bromeliads, it grows in the soil and doesn’t have a central “cup” for water.

Here is a comprehensive guide to caring for your Cryptanthus ‘Brown’:

Light

  • Bright, Indirect Light: This is the key to maintaining the plant’s vibrant, earthy colors. Place it in a location with plenty of bright, filtered sunlight, such as a few feet away from a sunny window or in an east-facing window.
  • Avoid Direct Sun: Direct, harsh sunlight can easily bleach or scorch the leaves, causing them to turn a dull, washed-out color or develop brown, crispy tips.
  • Low Light: While it can survive in lower light, its rich brown and bronze tones may fade, and the plant’s growth will be slower.

Watering

  • Keep Soil Evenly Moist, Not Soggy: The Cryptanthus ‘Brown’ prefers consistent moisture but is very susceptible to root rot if the soil is waterlogged.
  • Check Before Watering: Water when the top 1-2 inches of soil feel dry to the touch. It’s better to slightly underwater than to overwater.
  • Drainage is Crucial: Always use a pot with a drainage hole to ensure that excess water can escape. Never let the plant sit in standing water.
  • Water the Soil: Unlike some bromeliads, you should water the soil directly and avoid pouring water into the center rosette of leaves, as this can lead to rot.

Humidity

  • Moderate to High Humidity: As a tropical plant from Brazil, the Cryptanthus ‘Brown’ appreciates moderate to high humidity (50% or higher) but is relatively adaptable.
  • Increase Humidity: If the air in your home is dry, you can increase humidity by:
    • Using a humidifier.
    • Placing the pot on a pebble tray with water.
    • Grouping it with other plants.

Soil and Fertilizer

  • Well-Draining, Gritty Soil: The plant’s roots are shallow and dislike sitting in heavy, wet soil. Use a loose, well-draining, and airy potting mix.
  • Good Mixes: A blend of cactus or succulent soil with perlite, orchid bark, or a bit of compost is an excellent choice.
  • Fertilizer: This plant is not a heavy feeder. During the growing season (spring and summer), you can feed it once a month with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half or quarter strength. Too much fertilizer can cause the colors to fade. Avoid fertilizing in the fall and winter.

Other Care Tips

  • Temperature: The Cryptanthus ‘Brown’ thrives in warm temperatures, ideally between 65°F and 85°F (18°C-29°C). It is not frost-tolerant, so keep it away from cold drafts and windows during the colder months.
  • Pruning: Remove any dried or fading leaves from the outer ring as the plant matures to keep it looking tidy.
  • Propagation: After the mother plant flowers, it will slowly start to decline but will produce “pups” or offsets around the base. You can remove these pups when they are about one-third the size of the mother plant and pot them up to create new plants.
  • Pests: It is generally pest-resistant, but keep an eye out for mealybugs in the crevices of the leaves.
  • Toxicity: The Cryptanthus ‘Brown’ is considered non-toxic to pets, making it a safe choice for homes with curious animals.
