Asplenium thunbergii is a graceful, less common fern species valued for its arching fronds and refined, tropical look. Like most Asplenium ferns, it prefers stable moisture, gentle light, and higher humidity. It can be grown successfully indoors or in shaded outdoor spaces if its environmental needs are met.

Here is a detailed  care guide care for Asplenium Thunbergi :

Asplenium thunbergii grows best in bright, indirect light. Provide filtered sunlight or soft morning sun, but avoid strong midday and afternoon sun, which can scorch the fronds and cause pale patches or crispy edges. Indoors, place it near an east- or north-facing window. If grown outdoors, keep it under shade net or beneath taller plants where light is dappled. Too little light will result in slow growth and thinner, weak fronds.

Watering should be consistent and careful. This fern prefers evenly moist soil at all times, but it should never sit in waterlogged conditions. Allow only the top 2–3 cm of the potting mix to dry slightly before watering again. When watering, do it thoroughly so the entire root zone becomes moist, then let excess water drain away. Do not allow the plant to dry out fully, as repeated drought stress causes browning and frond dieback. In warm weather you may need to water more often; in cooler months reduce frequency slightly.

Humidity is very important for healthy foliage. Aim for at least 60% humidity if possible. Dry air leads to brown tips and curling fronds. To increase humidity, you can mist lightly in the morning, place the pot on a pebble tray with water, group it with other plants, or use a humidifier. Terrariums and shaded greenhouse conditions are also suitable. Keep the plant away from direct airflow from fans or air conditioners.

Use a loose, rich, well-draining growing medium. A good mix includes coco peat or peat moss, compost or leaf mold, and perlite or fine orchid bark. This combination keeps moisture available while allowing air to reach the roots. Avoid heavy soil that compacts easily. Good drainage is essential — always use pots with drainage holes. Repot every 1–2 years when the plant becomes root-bound, moving up only one pot size at a time.

Ideal temperature range is between 18°C and 27°C. It prefers stable, warm conditions and does not tolerate cold stress well. Try to keep temperatures above 15°C. Sudden temperature swings can cause leaf damage or shock. Protect from cold drafts, especially at night. In hot climates, ensure shade and humidity so fronds do not dry out.

Feed lightly during the active growing season. Use a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength once every 4–6 weeks during spring and monsoon. Ferns are sensitive to excess fertilizer, and overfeeding can cause leaf tip burn and root stress. Organic feeds such as diluted fish emulsion or seaweed extract also work well. Do not fertilize during very slow growth periods. Flush the soil occasionally with plain water to remove salt buildup.

Pruning and grooming are simple. Remove yellow, brown, or damaged fronds at the base using clean scissors or pruners. This improves appearance and directs energy to new growth. Avoid cutting healthy green fronds unnecessarily. If dust collects, gently rinse or wipe the leaves to keep them clean and efficient at photosynthesis.

Propagation is usually done by division. During repotting, carefully separate a mature clump into sections, ensuring each section has roots and several fronds. Pot divisions into fresh mix, keep evenly moist, and maintain high humidity until they establish. Spore propagation is possible but slow and more advanced.

Common problems include brown tips (low humidity or underwatering), yellowing fronds (overwatering or poor drainage), and scorched spots (too much direct sun). Check conditions and adjust gradually.

With soft light, steady moisture, warm temperatures, and good humidity, Asplenium thunbergii will grow into a refined, healthy fern that adds a soft tropical texture to your plant collection.
