Aglaonema Bamboo , also sometimes referred to as Aglaonema commutatum ‘Treubii’, is a beautiful and unique cultivar of the Chinese evergreen plant. Its slender, lance-shaped leaves with their rich green and lighter green or silvery markings give it a distinctive “bamboo” look. As with most Aglaonemas, it’s a relatively easy-care houseplant.
Here’s a guide to caring for your Aglaonema ‘Bamboo’:
Light
- Bright, indirect light is best. This will help the plant maintain its beautiful variegation and promote healthy, bushy growth.
- It can tolerate lower light conditions, but this may result in slower growth and a less vibrant leaf pattern.
- Avoid direct sunlight, especially from a south or west-facing window, as this can easily scorch the delicate leaves and cause brown, crispy spots.
Water
- Water when the top 1-2 inches of soil feel dry. Aglaonemas are susceptible to root rot if they are overwatered. It is always better to underwater slightly than to overwater.
- Ensure the pot has good drainage. A pot with a drainage hole is essential to allow excess water to escape.
- Reduce watering frequency in the fall and winter, when the plant’s growth naturally slows down.
Soil
- Use a high-quality, well-draining potting mix. A mix formulated for houseplants, with components like perlite or coco coir, will provide the aeration the roots need.
Temperature and Humidity
- Temperature: This plant thrives in average room temperatures, between 65°F and 75°F (18°C–24°C). Keep it away from cold drafts from windows, doors, or air conditioning vents, as cold temperatures can damage the foliage.
- Humidity: As a tropical plant, it appreciates moderate to high humidity. While it can tolerate average household humidity, it will thrive in more humid environments. To increase humidity, you can:
- Place the pot on a pebble tray filled with water.
- Use a room humidifier.
- Group it with other plants to create a more humid microclimate.
Fertilizer
- Feed your plant with a balanced, liquid houseplant fertilizer at half-strength every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer).
- Do not fertilize in the fall and winter when the plant is not actively growing.
Other Care Tips
- Pruning: Pruning is not often necessary, but you can remove any yellowing, brown, or damaged leaves at the base of the plant to keep it looking its best.
- Repotting: Repot your Aglaonema ‘Bamboo’ every 2-3 years, or when it becomes root-bound. Choose a new pot that is only one size larger than the current one.
- Toxicity: All Aglaonema plants are toxic to pets and humans if ingested. Keep it out of reach of children and animals.
