Caring for an Anthurium Queen, also known as the Anthurium warocqueanum, can be a rewarding experience due to its magnificent, long, velvety leaves. However, it’s a plant with specific needs, and successfully growing one often requires replicating its native tropical environment.Anthurium warocqueanum, or the Queen Anthurium, is a rare and exotic houseplant from Colombia, prized for its long, velvety, dark green leaves with striking silvery-white veins. It requires high humidity, bright but indirect light, and warm temperatures to thrive. To prevent root rot, plant it in a well-draining, chunky mix of materials like orchid bark, perlite, and sphagnum moss.

Here is a comprehensive guide to Anthurium Queen, Warocqueanum care:
Light
- Bright, indirect light is best. In its natural habitat, the Queen Anthurium grows as an epiphyte, meaning it grows on other plants under the forest canopy. This means it’s accustomed to filtered light, not direct sun.
- Avoid direct sunlight. Direct sun will scorch the delicate leaves.
- Signs of improper light:
- Too little light: Slow growth, leggy stems.
- Too much light: Light-colored or speckled leaves (light bleaching), brown spots or tips (leaf burn).
Humidity
- High humidity is crucial. The Queen Anthurium thrives in humidity levels of 70% or higher. While some growers have success with humidity as low as 50-60%, a higher level is ideal for robust growth.
- How to provide humidity:
- Use a humidifier. This is the most effective way to provide consistent humidity.
- Place a pebble tray with water near the plant.
- Group it with other humidity-loving plants.
- Misting is generally not recommended as a primary source of humidity. It provides a short-term boost and can lead to fungal issues if water sits on the leaves for too long, especially on the velvety foliage.
Watering
- Use a chunky, well-draining soil mix. This is arguably the most critical factor for success. The roots of an epiphyte need excellent aeration and should not sit in soggy soil, which leads to root rot.
- Common soil mixes: A mix of orchid bark, perlite, sphagnum moss, and horticultural charcoal is a good option.
- Water thoroughly but infrequently. Water when the top inch or two of the soil feels dry. The frequency will depend on your environment, but it’s often a good practice to let the pot dry out a bit between waterings.
- Signs of watering issues:
- Overwatering: Yellowing leaves, mushy stems, root rot.
- Underwatering: Drooping or wilting leaves, crispy brown edges.

Soil and Pot
- Chunky is key. A well-draining, airy mix is essential to prevent root rot.
- Potting: Choose a pot with excellent drainage holes. Many growers prefer a clear plastic pot to monitor root health and moisture levels. Terracotta pots can also work well as they wick away excess moisture, but may require more frequent watering.
Temperature
- Warm and stable. The Queen Anthurium prefers temperatures between 68-86°F (20-30°C).
- Avoid cold drafts. Temperatures below 60°F can damage the plant.
Fertilizer
- Feed during the growing season. Use a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half-strength.
- Fertilize every 4-6 weeks during the spring and summer. Reduce or stop fertilizing in the winter when growth slows.
- Be cautious not to over-fertilize, as this can lead to leaf burn.

Other Tips
- Airflow: Proper air circulation is important, especially in high-humidity environments, to prevent bacterial and fungal infections. A small fan can be beneficial.
- Toxicity: Anthurium warocqueanum is toxic to both humans and pets if ingested. Keep it away from children and animals.
- Pest Control: Regularly inspect your plant for common pests like spider mites, mealybugs, and aphids. Treat promptly with an insecticidal soap or neem oil if you spot any.
- Repotting: Repot every 2-3 years, or when the plant becomes root-bound. Choose a pot that is only slightly larger than the previous one.
