Light Requirements

This plant prefers low to medium, indirect light. In nature, Ludisia grows along forest floors under dense canopy, so it is adapted to shaded conditions. Bright, direct sunlight will scorch the leaves and can bleach the variegation. A north- or east-facing window works well, or place it a little away from a brighter window behind a curtain. Under artificial lighting, moderate LED grow lights are ideal. Too little light may slow growth and reduce variegation contrast.

Temperature
Ludisia discolor ‘Alba Variegated’ thrives in temperatures between 18–28°C. It tolerates normal indoor conditions very well. Avoid temperatures below 14°C and protect it from cold drafts and sudden changes. Consistent warmth encourages steady leaf production and healthy roots.

Humidity
Moderate to high humidity is best — ideally 60–80%. While it can survive in normal room humidity, it grows more vigorously and keeps better leaf quality in higher humidity. It performs excellently in terrariums or plant cabinets. If grown in open air, use a humidifier, pebble tray, or group plants together to increase local humidity. Avoid extremely dry air, which can cause leaf edge browning.

Watering
Keep the growing medium evenly moist but not waterlogged. Jewel orchids have shallow, delicate roots that should not dry out completely. Water when the top layer feels slightly dry. Always ensure excess water drains out — standing water leads to root rot. Use room-temperature water and avoid pouring directly onto the crown repeatedly.

Compared to many orchids, Ludisia prefers more frequent watering because it is terrestrial rather than epiphytic.

Ludisia discolor grows as a creeping terrestrial orchid with stems that spread and root along the surface. Over time, it forms a small clump. The alba variegated type may grow slightly slower than the standard form due to reduced chlorophyll in variegated areas — this is normal.

Flowering
Though grown mainly for foliage, it can produce upright spikes of small white flowers, usually in cooler months. After flowering, you can trim the spike at the base. Blooming may slightly slow leaf growth temporarily.

Pruning and Propagation
Propagation is easy through stem cuttings or division. Cut a healthy stem section with nodes and place it in moist sphagnum or the regular mix under high humidity. Nodes root quickly. Pruning leggy stems encourages branching and a bushier plant.
